Root tip resection

Root tip resection involves removing the root tip of the tooth. It is indicated if there is still inflammation or a cyst in the area of the root tip after root canal treatment. It can also be performed if a tooth does not become pain-free during conventional root canal treatment. The root tip is accessed through the jawbone. The surrounding inflammatory tissue and the root tip are removed. Root tip resection is often an important and final measure to preserve a tooth. However, the prognosis for success must be determined on an individual basis. Risks in the lower jaw are a lesion of the mandibular nerve (numb lip), in the upper jaw an opening of the maxillary sinus, secondary bleeding and injury to neighboring teeth.
